The New Testament in Welsh has a long and important history, playing a major role in preserving the Welsh language and supporting religious life in Wales. The first complete Welsh New Testament was translated by William Salesbury and published in 1567, making Scripture accessible to ordinary Welsh speakers rather than only clergy who knew Latin or English. This translation helped standardize written Welsh and strengthened national identity, especially during the Protestant Reformation. Later revisions, most notably William Morgan’s full Welsh Bible in 1588, built on this work, and Welsh New Testaments continued to be widely used in homes, chapels, schools, and even by Welsh soldiers and prisoners of war, where they offered comfort and a connection to home and faith.
