The Little Red Hen

The Little Red Hen

6C Illustrated by Berta and Elmer Hader. New Jersey: The Macmillan Company, 1928. First edition

Notes

Once upon a time in the charming countryside, there lived a spunky little red hen with a heart as fiery as her feathers. This feathery protagonist had a penchant for planting seeds and dreaming of golden fields of wheat. When she discovered some grains in her barnyard, she didn't cluck around – she set out to make the most delightful loaf of bread. As she energetically sowed, watered, and harvested, her fellow barnyard buddies— the lazy cat, the drowsy dog, and the nonchalant duck— opted for siestas over sowing. Yet, when the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air, the trio suddenly sprang to life, eager to partake in the feast. The little red hen, however, with a sly twinkle in her eye, declared, "Not a beak, not a paw, not a whisker shall taste my bread, for those who snooze lose the right to cruise on the bread-making cruise!" And so, with a triumphant cluck, the little red hen enjoyed her hard-earned, warm, and crusty victory.
