Novum Jesu Christi Testamentum

Novum Jesu Christi Testamentum

6B Holy Bible. London: Sam. Mearne, 1682. Latin.

Notes

This Latin Bible was printed in 1682 in London by Samuel Mearne, a prominent royal bookbinder and printer to King Charles II. Known for his exceptional craftsmanship and connection to the English court, Mearne's work is highly regarded among collectors and historians. The 1682 edition reflects both the enduring influence of the Latin Vulgate and the continued scholarly use of Latin Bibles in post-Reformation England. Though English translations were becoming more common, Latin remained essential for academic and ecclesiastical study. A Bible like this—produced during a period of political and religious restoration—carries not only spiritual significance but also a connection to the intellectual and royal history of 17th-century England.
